One Jersey regular is Richard Mauger although based in Oxfordshire, Richard was born on Island and as only missed one rally since the inaugural event in 1984 .

Anyone who has competed on the Jersey Car Rally will testify that although not high in stage mileage it is a very of arduous event.  It can in many ways be compared to a Welsh night rally.  It’s tight twisty lanes with their unforgiving granite banks and if it’s been a wet Autumn slippery leaves to also contend with tests the best and it can all be quite a matter of endurance.

The format in recent years as been to start the event on the Friday afternoon from the capital of the Island St. Heiler in it’s town centre giving people chance to see the cars and their drivers and co-drivers and a feel of what is to come, the Friday stages will run into darkness and finish around 10.00p.m. Saturday morning re-start will go into more special stages and finish around tea time.  For those who retired on the Friday night that can get their cars back in running order the Trophy Rally will run behind the main event on Saturday giving them the opportunity to have more fun.  The famous Bouley Bay hillclimb as in the past be incorporated into the stage mileage.

Quite a traditional format is for the Driver and Co-driver to fly to Island and the service crew to travel over on the boat with the service barge and rally car.  Jersey airport is well serviced from most UK and Irish airports and car hire is easy to arrange.  Ferry services run to the Island from Portsmouth, Poole and Weymouth and from St. Malo in France.

Many crews and spectators make the event a holiday taking their family along with them.  The shopping in St. Heiler is excellent with many of the famous high street names and it also offers that little difference to shopping from home.

With the Island’s strong British flavour and French connection you truly feel you are away and are almost certain to return year after year.

The Jersey Car Rally runs during the Islands Tennerfest, Tennerfest is sponsored by the Jersey Tourism board and you can delight in some 110 restaurants or more on Tennerfest menus for £10. £12.50 and £15. and in their own words ‘ Celebrating Great Value Food !’

Three unique shopping locations to the Island are Jersey Pearl, Jersey Gold and Jersey Pottery, the Pottery also boasts one of the best restaurants on the Island and once entered Queen Elizabeth II.

Jersey also hosts a World famous Zoo, founded by Gerald Durrell.  Durell’s mission and the legacy he as left was to save species from extinction, a visit is a truly good and satisfying experience.

During World War II Jersey and its fellow Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans, there are many fortifications left from that period, bunkers at Sorrell are easily viewed and the bunker at St. Peter in the grounds of the Jersey Car Museum is certainly worth finding time for but probably the most famous visitor attraction from the occupation is the under ground hospital in St. Lawrence, it wells catalogues the history of a very sad time for the inhabitants of the Channel Islands.

If you are looking for older historic places to visit Gorey Castle high up on it’s nest will delight you, Elizabeth Castle out in St. Aubins bay, but watch to keep your feet dry and the Martello towers from days of treat from Napoleon and at St. Catherine’s point you can walk out well towards France !

It’s coast line is a delight for all kinds of water sports and fishing and from the Bouley Bay side of the Island you will sight the coast of France.
