Flanders Car Rally 2008
Flanders Car Rally - Omloop Van Vlanndern. The 49th Flanders Car Rally will run out of the Hallen, Roselare, (Belgium) on the 12th - 14th September, 2008
The Flanders Car Rally is based in the busy City of Roeslare, just under 70 miles from the Port of Calais - a mere 1hour 30 minute drive away. With a regular ferry service from Dover to Calais, it is easy to reach.
The Flanders Car Rally as proved over its 47 years to be one of the most friendly overseas events to compete on, always reserving a special welcome for British and Irish competitors alike.
Servicing is centralized at the Hallen (Sports Centre) on good tarmac. The centre offers full facilities with a permanent café/bar serving all day food and drink, and a special set up for the rally in the main sports hall.
The Flanders Rally stages are all in close proximity of the Rally Centre with very limited road mileage. The cars return to the Hallen at the end of each leg and re-start via a ramp in the main sports hall, where you can drink and dine and see action on a tv screen. This also shows the cars live on their restarts.
One the most successful and popular British drivers to compete on the Flanders Car Rally was the late Tony Pond. Tony enjoyed Belgium, and was known for taking time out after the event was over to visit the WW1 airfields on his bike. History was one of his passions. |
During the years that the Rover Metro Cup/Challenge was running, Tony Pond was a great inspiration to the young drivers competing for their first time on the Flanders Car Rally and in Belgium.
The Flanders Rally takes you close to the historical site of Passendale, remembered for one of the bloodiest and worse military blunders of World War One.
If Rallying in Flanders teaches you one thing only, it will teach you respect for the lives given in World War One for our freedom today. Be sure to take time out and pay your respect and gratitude to the boys who gave their day for our freedom.
