Fastnet Skibbereen Car Rally
Fastnet - 26th October - 2008
The Fastnet Skibbereen Car Rally runs in late October and is organized by the Skibbereen & District Car Club.
Until 2006 the Fastnet Skibbereen Car Rally, other than on a rare occasion or two, has run from the Marine Hotel, Glandore, but in 2006 moves into the town of Skibbereen, with Rally Headquarters in the West Cork Hotel.
As the name suggests, the ‘Fastnet Skibbereen Car Rally’ runs out along the nearby coastline and country side off the fastnet rock.
You have a choice of ferries from the UK with the best routes being Fishguard to Rosslare and Swansea to Cork. The drive down to Cork over the years is much improved with many of the towns en route now bypassed.
The scenery on the rally route is often very dramatic with places like Mizen Head, Goleen, Skull and the famous Bantry Bay. There are many Islands off the mainland which are still inhabited, such as Bear Island, Clear Island and more. |
Hotel accommodation is usually well booked up in Skibbereen. Useful hotels are the Eldon & The West Cork Hotel. There is a large Hotel at Rosscarbery, called the Celtic Ross Hotel.
The picturesque fishing town of Baltimore, just 8 miles away from Skibbereen, offers a good standard of self catering accommodation, as well as the Baltimore Harbour Hotel.
